Ahem... Regarding downshift vs neutral/ uphill start and after reading pages of different techniques used to achieve the goal of taking you and your car back home in one piece, can I just say that there is no right or wrong way to do it, each situation is different, you as the driver usually asses your surroundings and makes decisions based on that. Using downshifts have their benifits ( more control, the ability to accelerate in an emergency, keeping your brakes in good condition, slowing down quickly and what not) I did a lot of driving yesterday and part of it was in traffic and I was basically doing a mix of what everyone's been saying, depending on how fast the traffic was moving and what the situation was. Maybe some members here have driven a stick shift for the first time which is not strange at all since some of you are relatively young and it's all about auto and tiptronic these days, but when you drive a stick shift you need to forget a lot of what you learned driving auto gear. Manual/ Auto both have their pro's and cons and you need to adapt to whatever your choice of tranny is. If for example you're stuck in traffic (stationary) and you're checking the forums because you're bored use your handbrake because if you're using the normal brake your foot may unconsciously slip off the brake causing your car to roll backwards or forwards ever so slightly ( depending on the incline of the surface, who can tell if it's 100% flat or not anyway ) and Bump the car in front or behind you, if the traffic is continuously moving keep it in gear and use foot brake and it goes on and on and on. It all depends on your style of driving, where you are, type of surface, daytime/ nighttime / condition of tires/brakes/ how many occupants in the car/ transmission etc etc etc.
Most important thing is to be aware of your surroundings and avoid any nasty incidents using the pro's of your gt86 to your advantage ( fast, nimble, good torque, small etc) while keeping in mind the cons ( can't think of much, except maybe poor visibility due to it being so low and in case of an accident God forbid it's not a hulk of metal like a lot of 4 wheel drives out there ).
So drive safe, use an earphone, keep the car in good mechanical condition,keep your eyes on the road and always be on "inbred alert" by checking your mirrors constantly. At high speed don't assume that the car you are overtaking has seen you and won't change lanes unexpectedly without indicating, don't assume that everyone on the road will do what makes sense, they could be on the phone, not checking mirrors, or a lady driver (no offense to the ladies here, I'm sure you could teach me a lot of new lessons) related to driving that is🤔... Ok I'm drifting away from the subject...
