Depends which car you learn and take your test in. To drive a manual you are taught clutch control, and appropriate use of the handbrake, something which seems to be a crime on this forum?

It also seems that you are taught to drive automatic and then allowed to jump straight into a manual without any further thought? Not having any dogs, just a genuine question and an observation.
We have a single license for both with no control over clutch education. You can drive automatic for the test then drive a manual home. The guys complaining about the hand brake are either elitists or pointing out it's "technically" not right but acceptable for learners. If you Google it, most every website suggests using the hand brake on hills until you can manage without it. Since it doesn't affect anyone but the driver, I feel it's ok for everyone. Whatever it takes to stay safe.
