If you are cruising, just leave it in gear or downshift once until you are doing like 5 or 10mph - even in fourth you can still step on the gas and move for an emergency, albeit like in a Prius. Then you can shift to second without ever letting the clutch out until you are totally stopped and somebody is behind you if you are worried about getting rear-ended. Still get some engine braking, can step on the gas, and you aren't rowing through gears.
If you can't heel-toe, you shouldn't be rowing anyway since you are going to be slowing down without any brake lights - what is the point of staying in gear to have power to escape a rear end if you are slowing down without your brake lights? Either that your you will look like a fool stepping on the brakes, taking your foot off to downshift, then lighting them up again over and over...
You can be in 6th and still brake to a snails pace before the car wants to stall. Why ever roll in neutral if you are over a few miles per hour?
