It's details but if you asked Toyota if their filter can be used on a Subaru, the official (and legal) response would be that it is not designed for Subaru BRZs.
In reality we all know what works and what doesn't. But for the average person who relies on a dealer for service, it's best that they stick with a part that won't give the dealer grounds (reasonable or otherwise) to deny legit service work.

That's actually incorrect. It needs to meet manufacturer standards, not be the manufacturers part. OP your are fine picking up anything that is up to industry standards, i.e. Subaru or Toyota will be fine.
