Bullshit.
My first car at age 17 was a 1994 Camaro Z28 with a 5.7 liter LT1 V8. It had far more power than a FR-S/BRZ, a solid rear axle, no traction control, and far more tire-smoking potential.
And I drove it perfectly safely for years. I was never involved in an accident of any kind, and never got a single speeding ticket in it.
It's all about the intelligence and responsibility of the driver. If you're not an asshat, it will be a fantastic first car. If you are, well, all bets are off.
