Ok, first for clarity, some functional clutch speak:
disengaged = clutch pedal depressed
engaged = clutch pedal released
I am beginning to suspect normal sound of lugging. To be sure, while you hear/feel the noise, what happens when you depress the clutch pedal? Try to keep the engine at the same rpm.
