Correct ....... not normal.

However, the only way to find out what is wrong is to physically inspect the flywheel, clutch disk, pressure plate, throw out bearing and input shaft bearing by taking it apart.

The only time I have ever heard a clutch "grind" is when all the asbestos (back in the day) was worn off and the disk was "running" on rivets.
