Subaru will make next-gen BRZ with Toyota, plug-in hybrid planned

Subaru and Toyota have agreed to design and produce the next generation BRZ, GT-86 and FR-S sports cars together, according to a recent report.

Speaking to Automotive News, Subaru boss Yasuyuki Yoshinaga confirmed the two companies will work together on the project but the schedule has not been decided yet. “We have already agreed with Toyota we will do a full model change,” he told the site. “We have not decided when it will be introduced.”

Given the fact Toyota is currently working on a facelift for the GT-86, the next generation of the sports trio will likely be introduced in no less than three years from now. No technical details are available at the moment, but the cars could retain their rear-wheel drive setup.

Subaru will also introduce its first plug-in hybrid model in 2018 and will position it mainly as a zero-emissions compliance play. The company probably won’t sell the green car in Japan, even though hybrid vehicles account for around 18 percent of the country’s light-vehicle market. The producer plans to offer the hybrid only in markets where required by regulations.

Currently Subaru has two hybrid models available on the Japanese market. These are the Impreza Sport Hybrid and the XV Crosstrek Hybrid, featuring a 2.0-liter DOHC horizontally-opposed engine working together with an electric motor.
