Go look at your tires right now. For every triangle on the shoulder, if you follow where the triangle is "pointing" you will find a wear bar. Anyone who says otherwise is spreading misinformation.

FWIW on the Rival S you can clearly see a change in color between the tread cap and the carcass, and it actually occurs above the point where the shoulder tread blocks end. It's not even close to where the triangles are, and if you roll over that far you start losing grip because you are relying on the sidewall rubber instead of the actual performance rubber.
Touche. I guess everything I've ever heard from fellow autox'er is to check the triangles for checking rollover.

I guess I need to change my "gauge" for checking tire rollover.
