I also always thought the danger in putting the tag on your dash is if you do get nabbed for it, you've essentially told the cop you know the law, and you've chosen to try and circumvent it.

If you don't have a front tag at all, you can at least reasonably play dumb.

I did know a guy who put his front tag and an intentionally broken bracket in his trunk. The rare times he got pulled over he'd tell the cop, "Oh, the bracket just broke off and I haven't had a chance to replace it. It's in the trunk right now if you want to see."
