We also use AAA for the house, etc which is a big deal. And there's cutback of 10% from having over a 3.0 GPA and multiple cars on a single insurance plan may provide a discount. My parents pay ~$800/year combined for their vehicles because they have no accidents on record, so since they aren't a liability AAA may give an even better discount (perhaps safe parents lead to safe children).

The funny thing is that if I had insured a new Honda Civic we would be paying at least $1000/6 months. (Ricer scene along with parts being stolen is my guess.)

True, but I've found the price I pay for the level of insurance I am given is an anomaly with the majority. I like to provide tips on how to lower insurance premiums without decreasing the level of insurance.
