Before you change anything at all, I would go for a ride with the friend(s) that say they can get WOT sooner and look at their entry and apex speeds. If they're entering and apexing slower, they're likely far enough below the limit that they can get away with being way earlier on the gas.
It could also be the line you're on, if you're trying to go WOT before unwinding the wheel and you're right near the limit. They might be taking a later apex and straightening out sooner.
How loose is the rear getting? Is it just rotating a bit under power, or is it actually stepping way out?

I found that the R888s were a better choice for me on my BRZ. Really loving them as a street and track tire. So far they are holding up well for me in street/highway driving and on track they have lasted about 10 hard days so far on track and aren't coming apart yet!

R888's and RA1's are no grippier than RS3's, and R888's heat cycle out WAY faster (typically long before the tread is gone).
If you want a fast R compound with tread, get the Hankook TD's.
