Back in the good 'ol day (1967), Goodyear asked Carrol Shelby to do a promo for their new economy tires (thuderbolts) with one of their GT500s. Shelby agreed, but without anyone else knowing he decided to build an absolute monster of a car that still ran on economy rubber. So Shelby's had his chief engineer build the Super Snake. All Aluminum 427 racing engine, new suspension, lightweight wheels, braided lines, pistons, the works.
The test was supposed to be a 500mi endurance test to prove the longevity of the tires with an everyday GT500 as the eyecandy... Instead, Shelby jumped into his new supercar and took it a few laps around the track at up to 170mph before handing the keys off the his engineer who finished the 500 miles around the track with an average speed of 142mph.
After rolling back into the bay to inspect the tires, it was confirmed that they still had %97 tire tread left.
The tires were 7.75" x 15" Goodyear Whitewall Thunderbolts
