nope, you're thinking of roll cage not roll bar, and yes you'll need safety equipment with roll cage since in case of accident there is a chance of head injury and bars will block the airbags in A column, not an issue with a roll bar..
roll bar is highly advised for street use for roll over protection so it already comes with the NC miata (hoop style in those plastic covers), and it's required at the track

the white Miata was mine and the black one is my friend's, we both got it at the same time but he installed his roll bar soon before I did..
notice how short is the OEM roll bar vs the proper roll bar on the right, with the helmet it barely clears with stock seats ..it's a no brainer for any convertible cars no matter what others say
