I killed the compressor in my heat pump 5 years ago. My own stupidity. The unit is at least 20 years old. The guy tried to sell me on a new unit but I called BS. Made him replace the compressor and watched him like a hawk. He had to go back to the shop to get the tools to fully evacuate the system before adding the refrigerant. 600 bucks later and it was working like new. Soon after, I found the floating ground in the control system that intermittently caused the blower to fail. It's keeping me cool as I type.
There are only a couple moving parts and ANYTHING can be fixed as long as due diligence is followed.
