If its the compressor wires, it does happen... if its not too bad you can get kits made exactly for this with better connectors to reduce the amount of resistance a bad connection causes which can burn up wires.

It sounds like the terminals were too far gone if the guy said you needed a whole new unit, if the terminals got really bad they can actually break the seal around the terminals and all the magic ice juice leaks out
