Is your old system R22 or 410a? You can still get dry charged R22 units for residential install if needed so you don't have to replace the evaporator

Trane and Carrier are both good, as stated earlier make sure it is appropriately sized. Are you hiring a contractor/AC install company? Just have them make you a few quotes comparing the different brands.
We tried looking for other possible problems with the AC but couldn't find anything. Then we had someone check it out for us and told us that a wire was burnt or something and that we needed a new whole unit. The weather is getting cooler so it's not as humid inside the house as it was last weekend.
