You sure about that? The BRZ got consistent praise for it's flat cornering nature, that is directly a result of it's low c.g. it also means that the 86 handles improved grip better while the Miata may struggle as it maxes out suspension travel with the higher g's.
imo the weak link is the weight, 450lbs is not something easy to overcome.

Part of the faster time could also be the gearing and may require an extra shift into third to reach 62.5mph aka 100kph

It is likely that figure is for the 1.5L engine not offered in America, we only get the 2.0L.

It was a weird test, they did improved tires
to the same class as the Bridgestones on the tested ND Miata (I linked it earlier in my argument that the S001's are NOT significantly faster than the Primacy's) 5:30 is where the 86 test starts.
Again, going from the Primacy's to Max Performance Summers (same as the S001) was worth 0.2 seconds.
Going to true performance tires RE11A was worth 2+ seconds, similar to the Direzza in the video above there's a big jump.
Edit: Oh and apparantly the S001 are also Low Rolling resistance tires according to Tirerack

The Potenza S001 is designed to combine low rolling resistance efficiency with maximum sports performance in dry and wet conditions.
