The 16" steels that TireRack supplies are ET50, which is only a 2mm difference from the stock ET48. The extra sidewall and skinnier cross section of a 205/55-16 makes the winters much smoother riding, and they'll dig in a bit better than a 215/45-17 would, although I bet you'd be had pressed to tell the difference in traction with the same tire brand/model. Ride quality definitely goes up though, which is nice in the winter.
