The pay/treatment part comes as a side consequence of the labor market issue, because Japan (unlike the US) actually makes it very difficult for a normal person to migrate there legally.
If one were to look hard enough into the Japanese economy, you'll find more companies that do the same thing... except most of those other companies have their parts sourced from places with already subpar labor conditions like China and other parts of SE Asia.
