I'd go with the group that gives you the most seat time with the best instructors, showing up to a true competitive event might leave you feeling out in the cold as everyone is more concerned with winning their class than helping a newbie, or at least there may not be enough mentors to go around.
The Lotus and BMW clubs near me have good reputations for this, I've heard SCCA near me only gets you ~4 runs whereas I average 6 with the BMW club and once had 7 plus fun runs afterwards put me to 11 that day for ~$60.
