I don't use my phone. When I switched carriers a while back and ended up with a new phone, I still had my old Galaxy Note. I set it up as a dedicated engine computer. Since it was a sunk cost on an item that had outlived its original purpose, it was essentially "free" for this purpose. It lives in the car all the time.

Even if you don't have an extra old phone to use, a used Note can be picked up for less than $100. Many of the Android tablets cost even less. So it still doesn't rise to the cost of a scan gauge to have a dedicated screen, even though it provides more features and more customization.
