well they can't entirely predict how its going to happen or how bad but by using data from the tsunami from a couple years ago, and the recent discovery by using ocean floor samples they've been able to estimate how many of these massive quakes have happened over time and they know that on average it happens every 260 some years or so and the last one was some 350+ years ago.

sadly there's no way to know when it'll happen, just that we know its bound to happen at some point.
