I do this for longer trips with the dog, but with a 25lb beagle, she sits up front with me in the passenger seat normally. If your dog isn't too giant, you can just toss him/her in the passenger seat as long as they can lay down (or not, if your dog is like mine and likes to "captain the ship" and lean through all the corners sitting down)

Make sure you put something down on the seats because even the black hair is very visible and sticks to everything. Forget to put down a blanket or something and your entire cabin will be covered in hair - I dig hair out of my shifter boot all the time.
