I had a 58 Chev that had vacuum powered wipers. They would completely stop every time you accelerated and the vacuum was used to advance the distributer. When you took your foot off the accelerator they would go like hell. Every once in a while they would start up so fast and hard that one or even both would fly off the car.
Spent many a night looking for wipers in the ditch but apparently I was way ahead of my time when I couldn't find them and had to drive without them.
