So not long after I sold my Sierra Cosworth, I started looking for a new weekend toy.

I wanted something that I could take for a run through the hills or out to the track, had potential for development, was easy to get parts for, and at the end of the day if I binned it, I could walk away from without losing too much sleep. Hence the Toyota 86 GT.

I started looking around on Carsales etc, and then got a call from a mate who had recently acquired an 86. He tells me he's had a change of mind as is looking to offload his new toy. The car already had an intake pipe, headers, exhaust, coilovers, Enkei RPF1 wheels, a remapped ECU and only 7,500 klms on the clock. Picked it up from him the next week.

First thing to do was purchase a few more track orientated bits, so I ordered a set of MCA Reds from Josh Coote, QFM A1RM brake pads, braided brake lines, brake fluid, GTS calipers and rotors, Mishimoto oil cooler and catch can, and Hankook RS-3 tyres.

Before I started on fitting up the new parts I set about contacting Tony Young at Coyote Tuning to get a custom E85 tune done. The car had already been remapped by Willall Racing, and had 4 different maps including E85, but I wanted to run exclusively on the E85, and wanted to make sure if was going to be a safe tune for the track. So I dropped in a K&N air filter into the standard air box and ended up with a conservative 133 rwks. Tony did a great job and I would highly recommend him to anyone.

So by the time the tune was sorted, the new bits had arrived and it was time to fit them up. I won't bore you with details as it's all fairly straight forward stuff, save the front brake calipers. Interestingly the pistons in the GT calipers and slightly bigger than the GTS calipers, so whilst I fitted the GTS brakes to allow the use of the larger, ventilated GTS rotors, the front caliper ended up being a "hybrid" of sorts using the sliding part of the GTS caliper and the GT part containing the pistons.

I wanted everything I did to the car to be about performance rather than looks, but I did feel it looked a little cut off at the rear end so I fitted a 5 Axis rear lip.

First track day was a Time Attack event at Lakeside Raceway. As it was more of a shakedown than anything, I took it pretty easy at first, and only did a total of three sessions. In saying that I was pretty happy with a fastest time of 62.95, especially on the Hankook RS-3s. With some decent R specs, I reckon there's a high 60s to be had.

Last weekend I managed to get out for my second track day at Queensland Raceway. Thankfully we were on the shorter Sprint circuit, and after 4 sessions, managed a 60.6, which I was pretty happy with considering the basic mods to date.

I'm not sure where this will end up in the future, but I may end up taking out the rear seats to put in a half cage for continued weekend straps and track work, or strip it out completely to build a Prod Touring or Prodsports race car, or maybe turbo it for more fasts if i get bored with the NA configuration.
