I don't completely buy into that idea with both tires being available early in the season. The Rivals were announced the same month the Bridgestones were available and they were on cars within a month after that. This was all March and April time frames and before many National events hit the country. That gives people plenty of time to consider which tire to use and to develop their car with for Nationals.
With that said, in the end people will go with whatever is faster. Even with a year of development look at how quickly people dumped their Z2s and RS3s for RE71Rs once they heard how fast they were. People will go with the route that gives them the best chance at winning and the tire selection is among the most critical decisions you can make. If they thought a certain tire was faster or had more upside then they would tune and setup their car for it.
If the Rival S was the more competitive tire you'd see more people on them. They are fast and good but Bridgestones are the tires that are winning. Until someone can prove the Rival S are generally faster and worth their higher cost, Bridgestones will continue to be the favorites of 2015.
