Took it to a dealer today and they said that it's "nothing to worry about" and that I should try changing to transmission fluid because "I have high mileage" ???
Ok, not sure if anyone is still following this, but i got my problem fixed. It was rust on the linkage between the shifter and the transmission. The dealer had initially checked to see if the shifter pivot ball was greased (it was) and decided to try replacing the entire shifter assembly. When they removed the assembly, they saw the rod linkage was rusted. Replaced that and it's free moving again.
