Take your other hand and depress the clutch slightly (just enough to loosen tension on the rod) and wiggle the rod both ways (not just the way you want to turn). However it is a bit slippery (at least mine was) which can make it hard to get a good grip for turning.

You sure you properly loosened the nut on the rod?
