Hello Jonathan, how did this story end in 2013?
I got the exact same problem (very similar to your pics, a pitty I didn't take some) also on the drivers side of the Toyota GT86 and since it was bought used the dealer started by writing it off as "someone must have hit it" and "it was previously repaired/repainted/replaced".
Fortunatelly I insisted a bit and they checked for repaint work and removed the rear bumper and lights to check for repairs and/or signs of unusual pressure applied to the components.
Since they found none I'm getting the cracked part replaced under warranty.
It's noteworthy to point out that, although there's a TSB for Scion FRS regarding this issue, the dealer stated this doesn't apply for European models as its production is different from North America.
