There is some relationship between RPM and throttle position that I think plays some part in how it gets all jerky.
The worst feeling is if you're in "M" in stop and go, and you can feel the TQ converter locking and unlocking while in 1st, which causes a huge jerk.
So what I do now while I sit on the 401/QEW in the middle of a shitstorm is actually put in on "M" and snow mode, so 1st is completely locked out, just like how on an actual M/T you're doing rolling stops in 2nd.....
