Didn't even know you guys had responded so not trying to keep the peace this time.
In 26 years of occupational health and safety I have seen several dozen people get canes. A lot of how they use them depends upon the nature of the injury, overall physical condition and personal comforts. The opposite side balance (as your wife said) is great if the person doesn't have the upper body strength or has other issues and is better if walking distances. The same hand take up the weight is the preferred method if there is the strength to support it and allows the person to walk faster but is more physically taxing.
