I took a quick video. First attempt I just let the door drop down on its own weight. Then 2/3rd are with a normal push equivalent to what is needed for closing the side doors. For the final one I used more force and had to push all the way down.

If you want to close it down without pushing all the way through, you almost have to slam it so there is enough force to counter the resistance of the rubber or the spring loaded lever.

You may say the answer is to not close it like a pansy, but the force needed is so out of line vs closing the side doors or other car trunks that it just takes a while getting used to.
