Funny you mention the RX-8, I actually the first model year pre-ordered but backed out after the whole hp debacle when it came out (Rated at 250hp had to be de-tuned to meet US emissions to 238hp). I still got to test drive it before I backed out, but in a feel perspective that engine was amazing. So smooth felt like it could rev forever. A engine with that kind of character is what I would have liked in the twins. However, I think the renesis's was too impractical with burning oil and mpg to be my #1 choice.

I actually wouldn't have minded an inline even if it did raise the cog. I don't think the small increase in cog would be a huge detriment to the overall feeling of the twins. The C7 has a lower cog than the twins and that has a v8.
I didn't mention the RX-8. I don't think Mazda would use the 13B Renesis again, I would love it in an 86, if my car blew up and I didn't have to worry about the legality of a swap I would be seriously pursuing a 12A/13B of some kind. Given that Subaru was given the funding and access to Toyota technology I assume that Toyota would aid in the design of the 16X in my hypothetical dreamland.

I think the c.g. factor is hugely underrated and forgotten now that engineers are no longer the people being interviewed about the car. Every Honda, Toyota, Miata, BMW, Mustang, Camaro I've been in out of the box all have massive amount of body roll and the primary medicine is a stiff, jarring, suspension to keep the car flat, which compromises daily ride quality. I'm not saying the 86 rides like it's on a cloud (it is rather stiff) but from the first turn to the one I took tonight on my way to dinner, body roll was nonexistent, egging me on "yeah you could have taken that '25 mph' off-ramp at 65 instead of that wimpy 45 you just did".

Edit: Not to sleight the RX-8, if the 86 never existed I'd probably be driving one right now as it's the only thing that qualifies as an affordable lightweight RWD coupe built in the last 10 years. And as already evidenced, I've got a hard on for rotaries. I'm hoping to pick up a 7 (SA/FB) before prices creep out of 'toy' territory.
