I get that it was popular in the 90s with neons, but no one I know uses them, they use LEDs, a technology very much moving into consumer grade availability today. Hitlights is a good example, multiple times last year they changed or improved their water resistant strip offerings. So the what year is it joke feels unfounded to me when the availability of products is literally changing this year.

It isn't neons vs. LEDs; it's underlighting at all. It was cool for about three months when the original F&F came out. Just because new products keep coming out doesn't mean people should keep buying them.
