You're never required to open anything for a police officer. Not a door, not a car, not a purse. To require you to do so would be a violation of the Fourth and Fifth Amendments.

You are obligated to comply with their request if they have reasonable cause. In the case of the car with the big exhaust canister or something that suggest modified emissions, you're SOL.
