Is it hard to empathize with those who feel they dont need extra steps involved to get their car from point A to point B with a curvy road in between? If you want more steps, why don't you manual die-hards turn your stereo off in between every acceleration too so you ensure you arent wasting any energy on something that isn't moving the car forward, or close/open your windows while driving to improve aero.

The FR-S can still be fun with an auto. I have driven one and it was pretty good in sport mode. The FR-S has a slew of disconnecting features though. Everything from the gas pedal to the ABS to the traction control (even while turned off). You can do the pedal dance or pull the ABS fuse but the car was designed to be run with all of those things. They managed to make the steering feel almost manual like by adding weight into the mix but if you turn the wheel suddenly then the power kicks in and feel vanishes. I cant knock power steering to much though because I have been tearing up my shoulder racing my miata.. But we all make sacrifices
Anyways the point is that we can have both. It is just the logic that oh everyone wants autos so we will stop making manuals! hell the autos shift faster anyways how can people be upset with that! that is the true issue. Give people freedom and you can make almost anyone happy.
