I think the argument for the ft86 not being a Scion seems to hold more water than the contrary. But it's still all just speculation. Perhaps Toyota has bigger plans for the Scion brand...? Is it possible that they (ie Toyota) plan a shift in orientation, from ricey stunner pimped out rides to real performance aspirations? Such could be one answer to why the ft86 could be branded as a Scion.
I guess time will tell.
