Did you know with 50lb u can lift up the entire car given the right leverage? The fact is that you are removing mass at the rearmost end of the vehicle which has a lot more effect than removing a person's mass right above the centre of the mass.

The car becomes underdamped when the spare and 4/5 tank of fuel is removed at the rear it's as simple as that.
