Or, the other option is do what I do... pay cash for the car, drive it until it has no value and then you can do whatever you want to it because it just doesn't matter.

In my entire car history I think I have traded in one car that had more than a $1000 trade-in value. It was a red Saturn SC that I owned for two years, and just couldn't take it any longer. My last two daily drivers (one purchased new, one purchased one year old) had almost 300,000 miles on them when I "traded" them in. No regrets on anything I added to them.
