You're working the discussion down to a specific scenario. "Resting your hand on the shifter" can range from a simple touch to the weight of your whole arm. If you're not moving the shifter, you're most likely just fine. If you're resting enough weight to cause the stick to move, it might cause enough deflection to move past the ball detents.

Don't be the guy who tries to shut down an argument without looking at the whole picture.

"No matter what you do" is a pretty big loophole to that argument...

Some transmissions are obviously more susceptible to these kinds of problems (dragging forks, etc). This topic has been discussed all over the internet with people who do rebuild trnasmissions, on a huge number of different platforms. It is real, however unlikely it may be to happen to this car. And I would think actually rebuilding transmissions does lend some insight and experience that armchair engineers can only speculate.
