This is my backup plan. It should be fairly easy to fab some kid seat supports out of aluminum, bolt it in, and then LATCH the seat on top. That would get rid of the seat thickness moving every thing down and back. (everything in this car is down and back, down and back).

It's getting the wife on board with your fabrication skills that is going to be the hard part.
