My Grandfather was the same way. When they bought the farm my Grandfather immediately installed indoor plumbing, but he used the original outhouse right behind for about 10 years, despite my grandmother's objections to the "eyesore". One Saturday, he went into town and when he got home the outhouse had "mysteriously" caught fire and burned down. That's when he built the field stone one I described above.
It was one of those disagreements where a word was never said, and both parties felt like they won.
