Also, the nut around the rod is 17mm & when I try to twist the rod around the 17mm nut the clutch pedal doesn't descend. Am I looking at the wrong nut or is my car different due to it being sold in a different country ?

The rod just spins in the master cylinder. It is CRITICAL that you get the switch adjusted properly so it allows the master cylinder rod to fully extend. I suspect pump-up due to improper adjustment is the reason some people have had clutch slippage issues.
