If you really do run your own restaurants then you should know that restaurants
ALWAYS make courtesy calls to verify customer reservations. It's to prevent situations like yours from happening.

I actually do run my own business. I have two restaurant in the Bay Area and this is no way to treat customers.
If a customer made a reservation at my restaurant and I gave the tables away, you can imagine the shit i would get. Same situation here. Not sure why you are defending him.
