But yes, 2nd can be clunky when cold. Try delaying your 1>2 shift when it's cold a little to let the synchro do its work. I don't mean shift at higher RPM; I mean let the rpms hover for a moment before you shift 1>2.
You could also swap your fluid to something like motul gear 300 75w90; lots of people claim that helps.
Either way, it will improve with time.
