I don't think it has much to do with the hood being CF. With the level of stupidity someone has to posses to do something like that, they might have not known what it is - especially if it was dark. If someone has the mindset where they're willing to key a car, I don't think they look into the details of it too much, and just see a nice car, and they want to fuck it up.
Typically the hood is an ideal choice as it's a flat, level surface, it's incredibly obvious, and unavoidable to not see it - usually right away as you approach your car.
