How will an air bag "suffocate you"? They don't stay inflated long (seconds) and are actually already deflating when you contact them. (I have been told that the FRS side impact ones stay inflated longer then the norm though)
Also the last thing you would want is it to "pop out the door a bit" as they are supposed to hold and cushion you not move away from you.
As I said above the doors unlock if the airbag is activated so that there is access in the event of an incident. There is no need to have the doors unlock just for braking quickly.
These are not "my guess" as this is one of the things the company I work for makes so I have to have at least a working knowledge on the systems (so the engineers can't BS me).
