I'd had my stock shifter replaced under warranty (rattly shifter TSB), and when I did the SSK install just now that dust boot was pretty mangled, to the point where I couldn't really get it back on the way it's supposed to be. Right now it's just sort of roughly enclosing the linkage, but I feel like it could slide off and wind up just hanging on the rod that the shift level attaches to (not sure what it's called...).
Other than that the install went super smooth. I went on a quick test drive to make sure everything felt alright and I was very impressed by the new shifter. Very short and very positive shifts.

the car will be driveable, but over time corrosion, dust, dirt and sand could probably find a way to attach itself right there and make things not as smooth. I'd probably order one from the dealer and throw it on next time you do an install.
