My Uncle (who is only 8 years older than me) and I share a story of drag racing involving a "3 on the tree" yellow 1968 Ford F150. He was 18, I was 10.
We were "in town" picking up feed for my Grandfather's farm, when a buddy of my Uncle's pulls up to a stoplight next to us in his identical truck. Well, the race was on. My uncle nailed the light and we were well ahead going through first gear. When he slammed it up into second, the gear lever pin broke and the gear lever came off in his hand, he went flying against the steering wheel from his momentum (hitting his forehead, explaining why ^above^ the forehead is mentioned as important to manual shifting), and we ended up in the ditch, fortunately no worse for the wear.
40 years later, he still has that truck, and we still laugh about it every time we ride in it.
